Damage Saturation Explained: Why Torpedoes Hurt a Destroyer Less Than a Battleship
It is one of the most common confusions in Legends. The same Shimakaze torpedo lands on a Tier X battleship for 20,000 damage, then lands on a Tier VIII destroyer for 13,000. The natural conclusion is that the destroyer must have some hidden torpedo resistance. It does not. The answer is a mechanic called damage saturation, and once you understand it, a lot of strange damage numbers stop being strange.
First, kill the obvious theory
If a destroyer were soaking torpedo damage through a stat, that stat would be its torpedo damage reduction, the same value battleships get from their torpedo bulges. GamingDiver tracks that figure for every ship and shows it on the ship page under Survivability as Torp Reduction.
Pull up Marceau, the Tier VIII French destroyer from the example above. Her torpedo reduction reads 0%. Compare that to Bismarck at 22% or Yamato at 55%. Destroyers carry no torpedo bulge, so they get no torpedo damage reduction at all. The stat answer to "how much torpedo reduction does this destroyer have" is simply zero, every time. That is a dead end, which means the 13,000 figure is being produced by something that is not a ship stat.
A ship is not one health bar
The health number you see in port is a total, but the game does not treat it as a single pool. Every ship is split into roughly five sections for damage purposes, the bow, the stern, the central hull, the superstructure, and the casemate, and each section holds its own slice of the total HP.
This is the key idea: a hit can only ever drain the HP that is actually present in the section it lands on. You can hit a section for a number larger than that section can hold, but you will not be paid for the overflow. The shell or torpedo damage you see in port is a listed value, not a guaranteed one.
Saturation: a section that is already dead
Saturation is what happens as a section fills up with damage. Each section has thresholds, and as its remaining HP drops past them, incoming damage to that section is scaled down:

That blackening is not cosmetic. It is the game telling you the section is saturated and that further fire there is close to wasted. Saturation applies to normal, non-citadel damage. A citadel hit is not reduced by saturation, which is why a citadel on an already-wrecked cruiser can still delete it.
Why destroyers live in saturation
Now the destroyer-specific part. Saturation hits destroyers harder than anything else for one simple reason: the sections are tiny.
Marceau has a total of 20,500 HP. Split that across five sections and a bow or stern section holds only a few thousand HP. Now look at the torpedo that hit her. A single Shimakaze torpedo carries a listed damage of 23,767, which GamingDiver shows on the Shimakaze page as the torpedo Display damage.
Read those two numbers together. One Shimakaze torpedo is listed for more damage than the entire Marceau health bar. There is no section on that destroyer, and no destroyer of that size at all, that can pay out the torpedo's full listed value. The torpedo is capped by the HP physically present where it lands. If the bow took fire earlier in the match and is already blackened, that section is saturated, its remaining HP is small, and the floor kicks in. A torpedo that reads 23,767 in port cashes out for 13,000 because 13,000 is all that bow had left to give.
The Tier X battleship in the same example behaved differently only because its sections are huge and, in that moment, fresh. A fresh battleship section can absorb close to the torpedo's full listed value, so the same torpedo reads near 20,000 there.
Torpedoes also lose value at the tips
Saturation is the main story, but there is a second, smaller factor stacked on top of it. In the WoWS damage model that Legends inherits, torpedoes that strike the bow or stern of any ship are dealt at a reduced rate by design, with community testing putting the default at roughly one third of normal. A torpedo into the nose of a destroyer is therefore hit twice: once by the bow reduction, and again by whatever saturation that nose has already accumulated.
What to do with this
- Spread your torpedoes across the hull. A full spread into one section of a destroyer wastes most of the salvo to saturation. Torpedoes walking down the length of a target pay out far better than torpedoes stacked on the same spot.
- Aim torpedoes amidships, not at the nose. The central hull holds the most HP and takes full value. The bow eats both the tip reduction and saturation.
- Finish blackened destroyers with guns, not a torpedo dump. If a destroyer's bow is already charred, a torpedo there will floor out. A few HE shells to a fresh section, or a single torpedo amidships, is more reliable than a full spread into the saturated end.
- Do not read "0% Torp Reduction" as "torpedoes do full damage." That stat only describes torpedo bulges. Saturation is a separate mechanic that no ship page can show as a number, because it depends on how damaged the target already is.
