Anton Iosifovich Gurin (1910–1962) joined the Soviet Navy in 1928 and served in submarines before taking command of the destroyer Gremyashchy in 1938. Transferred with her to the Northern Fleet, he fought the Second World War first as her captain and later as commander of the 1st Destroyer Division, carrying out more than a hundred combat missions and escorting dozens of Allied Arctic convoys through German air and submarine attacks. He received the US Navy Cross, was made a Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945 and became a rear admiral in 1948.
